Running: My #1 Productivity Habit

Running has changed my life, becoming my most effective productivity habit. Like journaling, running isn’t just beneficial for physical health—it deeply enhances mental clarity, reduces stress, and boosts daily productivity.

I recently decided to run my first full marathon later this year, so I’ve kicked up my training an extra notch over the past few weeks.

Let’s dive into how running promotes productivity and why it’s become my favorite habit in the run-up (no pun intended) to my first marathon.

How Does Running Promote Productivity?

Adding Structure to My Days

Running gives me a consistent daily routine. By scheduling runs at specific times, usually in the morning or during a midday slump, I anchor my day around a productive and healthy activity. This structure prevents procrastination and ensures I start the day with clear intentions.

Leave the House and Get My Daily Steps

Working from home or an office can feel restrictive and monotonous. Running breaks that cycle. Getting outside for a run forces me to disconnect momentarily, refresh my surroundings, and naturally boosts my daily step count. It’s a practical way to stay active and connected to the environment around me.

Raise Heartbeat and Lower Stress & Blood Pressure

The physical act of running raises my heartbeat, which directly helps reduce stress and anxiety and lowers blood pressure. Studies show exercise like running releases endorphins—natural mood lifters. After a run, I return to tasks feeling calmer, less anxious, and more ready to tackle challenges with optimism.

More Energy

Running paradoxically increases my energy levels. While running expends energy physically, it stimulates circulation and metabolism. Post-run, I feel rejuvenated, sharper, and ready for complex cognitive tasks. Running regularly means sustained higher energy levels throughout the week.

Meditation

Running also provides an ideal opportunity for mindfulness. The rhythmic nature of breathing and steps helps my mind slip into a meditative state. Similar to traditional meditation practices, this mindfulness aspect of running enhances focus and emotional stability, and self-awareness, directly benefiting my productivity.

Building a Better Business AFK

Finally, running is my dedicated podcast time. During a 30-minute (5k) or 1-hour+ (10k+) run, I tune into business podcasts like My First Million, Founders, and the All In podcast. This habit helps me build and refine my business skills and strategy even when I’m not at my desk. Running thus transforms into a powerful session of professional growth—helping me build a better business away from keyboard (AFK).

Running Productivity in a Nutshell

I’ve noticed how running improves my productivity through physical, emotional and mental well-being over the past weeks of marathon preparation and years of running addicition. Whether you’re looking to structure your day, reduce stress, boost energy, or engage in mindfulness, running offers profound benefits.

It truly is my #1 productivity habit.

Try incorporating running into your routine and experience these productivity boosts yourself.
